Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson (born November 22, 1984)  is an American actress, model and singer. She made her film debut in North (1994) and was later nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead for her performance in Manny & Lo (1996), garnering further acclaim and prominence with roles in The Horse Whisperer (1998) and Ghost World (2001). She shifted to adult roles with her performances in Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) and Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003), for which she won a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Leading Role; both films earned her Golden Globe Award nominations as well.

Jonze’s indie tech-romance Her, Scarlett Johansson has the difficult task of voicing a computer operating system so beguiling that Joaquin Phoenix’s protagonist could conceivably fall in love with it. And as the filmmaker revealed last week during an A.F.I. panel discussion for the film, perfecting Johannsson’s character was much more challenging than either he or the actress had expected

While writing the script, which happens to be his first feature, the director said he went to great lengths to get in the mindset of the O.S. character Samantha: “I really tried to empathize with her and understand what her experience would be.” After initially casting Samantha Morton for the role and recording her dialogue, production hit a snag. “Samantha was really involved  on set  giving Joaquin a lot to work with,” Jonze explained. “But once we got to editing, we realized that the character was not working for what we needed so we ended up re-casting  .

“One of the things that Scarlett Johannsson and I were talking about when she came over and we read a bunch of scenes,” Jonze said, is “that when Samantha is created, she doesn’t have any fears or doubts or insecurities or baggage like we do. We learn self-doubts. It was at that point where Scarlett said, ‘Oh O.K., this is going to be harder than I thought it was going to be.’ She was trying to unlearn those things.”

Since the project, Johansson’s performance has earned the actress critical accolades at the New York Film Festival, and awards-season support from Her producer Megan Ellison, who has confirmed that the production will campaign for the actress to garner a nomination. If she does earn an Oscar nod for her nontraditional supporting-actress role,

she has every quality imaginable — the elegance, beauty, wit and impertinence that would make her a perfectly decent Parisian if she decides to move permanently into the apartment she has bought in Paris not far from here,” Michel Denisot, Vanity Fair France's editorial director, said of Johansson.

Johansson may not actually be French, but the French seem to love her. She’s dating Romain Dauriac, a French creative agency manager, and thus splits her time between France and the U.S.
